Clever medicine

Mindfulness has been described as “the practice of learning to focus attention on moment-by-moment experience with an attitude of curiosity, openness, and acceptance.”

A new review provides convincing evidence that specific types of “mindfulness practices” have benefits for patients with certain physical and mental health problems.

Dr William R. Marchand of the George E. Wahlen Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City reviewed published studies and evaluated the health benefits of mindfulness-based practices.

“An extensive review of therapies that include meditation as a key component — referred to as mindfulness-based practices — shows convincing evidence that such interventions are effective in the treatment of psychiatric symptoms and pain, when used in combination with more conventional therapies,” says Marchand.

His study is published in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice.

As part of the research, Marchand reviewed published studies evaluating the health benefits of mindfulness-based practices.

Experts often say that “Practicing mindfulness is simply experiencing the present moment, without trying to change anything.”

Researchers assessed three popular techniques:

  • Zen meditation, a Buddhist spiritual practice that involves the practice of developing mindfulness by meditation, typically focusing on awareness of breathing patterns.
  • Mindfulness-based  stress reduction (MBSR), a secular method of using Buddhist mindfulness, combining meditation with elements of yoga and education about stress and  coping strategies.
  • Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), which combines MBSR with principles of cognitive therapy (for example, recognizing and disengaging from negative thoughts) to prevent relapse of depression.

Investigators discovered evidence that MBSR and MBCT can help to relieve general psychological distress and mitigate depression and anxiety.

“The art of living… is neither careless drifting on the one hand nor fearful clinging to the past on the other. It consists in being sensitive to each moment, in regarding it as utterly new and unique, in having the mind open and wholly receptive.”

Kidney thieves out of business

In the mid-90’s, the urban legend of kidney thieves was rampant. In New Orleans, Houston, Las Vegas… all over the world: the story of a guy waking up drugged , in a bathtub of ice, a surgical scar across the back…….. missing a kidney. No confirmed victims have ever come forward so we assume it as a myth.

But this isn’t:

“The development of lab-built body parts is being spurred by a shortage of organ donors amid rising demand for transplants. Also, unlike patients getting transplants, recipients of lab-built organs won’t have to take powerful anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their lives. That’s because the bioengineered organs are built with the patients’ own cells.

Until the late 1980s, few scientists believed it would be possible to make human organs because it was a struggle to grow human cells in the laboratory. The task became easier once scientists figured out the chemicals—known as growth factors—that the body itself uses to promote cellular growth.

Scientists started out growing simple organs. In 1999, Anthony Atala, director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., implanted lab-grown bladders into the first of several children with severely dysfunctional bladders. The organs have continued to function well for several years. Dr. Atala’s team now is trying to grow a whole range of bioengineered parts, from simple blood vessels to human livers.”

When I arrived to my Gym yesterday evening, I open the door and was assaulted by the overwhelming ugly of what’s called death metal music. I don’t like it but the young men who had the gym to themselves before I got there sure do. They had it cranked up to 11! Courteously, they asked if I was ok with that. I was. I popped my ear buds in and went to work.  Taste aside, the psychology of Music is well known. It’s sometimes exploited by clever capitalist to sell us things or crafty would-be suitors to promote an attraction advantage. I have been playing the drums for well over 30 years and Each and every day I am emotionally touched by some piece of music. But why?

A famous study,, launched a thousand news articles regarding the way we are influenced by music. Music is a powerful mood regulation strategy, a powerful emotional conduit and a powerful weapon in my daily quest for beauty and meaning in this life. It’s beyond the sensual, it’s cognitive wiring.

Even so-called deaf people can sense music.  “Deaf people sense vibration in the part of the brain that other people use for hearing – which helps explain how deaf musicians can sense music, and how deaf people can enjoy concerts and other musical events. “These findings suggest that the experience deaf people have when ‘feeling’ music is similar to the experience other people have when hearing music. The perception of the musical vibrations by the deaf is likely every bit as real as the equivalent sounds, since they are ultimately processed in the same part of the brain.”

Very Enlightening.

From physics, we know sound is a form of energy, like light. We know the propagation of energy is ubiquitous and vibrations pass into and through us every moment of every day. From the concept of acutonics to the photoelectric effect, we are awash in several forms of energy and are literally bathed in this light of music.

Pink Princess Hero

This might be the most inspired thing I read today.

“Baton Rouge surgeon, Catherine Baucom, MD of Elliot Mastology Center, was on her way to surgery at BRASS Surgery Center Wednesday morning when she found herself caught in the traffic caused by the accident that shutdown Interstate 10 early Wednesday morning.”

This news link from WFAB in Baton Rouge ,Louisiana covers the story.

“According to officials at BRASS Surgery Center, Dr. Baucom tried to navigate the gridlock to no avail, so she decided to take matters into her own hands. Dr. Baucom remembered a friend that lived a few blocks from her position in the mayhem and made her way to his house. ”

She commandeered a kids bike and rode that bike (in the Louisiana august heat)  to her job, to serve others.

“It was hot pink and small,” Dr. Baucom said, describing the bike.  “The helmet was pink with princesses.” And ” she did utilize the plastic basket on front, to put her cell phone in.  Showed her experience with a bike.”

That is dedication and professionalism in the face of adversity on parade.

She explains “”A lot of our patients are women and they come in from out of town.  They’re very nervous, for different reasons.  So I felt like I needed to get there for them,”

What happens when your born a woman, but want to be a man?  You take hormones to change your features and elect to have your body mutilated into what your self image is satisfied with. But Then you want to be a homosexual man. ( you want to partner and love a man, even though you were born a woman and its perfectly reasonable for a woman to love a man. So now you want also to be a man AND a homosexual transgender man at that.)  Then you want to birth a baby with your “gay” male partner and breastfeed like a mother, even though you claim you are ” fully male” and a “regular dude”………. Where to begin.

“MacDonald was born a female but transitioned to a male at age 23 through a course of hormone treatments and chest contouring surgery. “I retained my female reproductive organs, but I felt (and still feel) fully male, and anybody seeing me on the street would never guess that I’m anything but a regular dude,” he writes in an Out Magazine article published in April. He also firmly identifies himself as a father, rather than a mother. “He also identifies himself as homosexual (“yes, I’m that complicated,” he quips) and wed his husband before becoming pregnant with their child. Before giving birth naturally he found about a breastfeeding method for women who’ve had mastectomies. Through SNS, a tubular device that connects a bottle to the nipple area so the child can simulate the experience of nursing, MacDonald began feeding his son, supplementing his own minimal production with lactation donations. ”

First, the disclaimers. I cant express how miniscule of a damm I could give if someone is heterosexual, homosexual or asexual.

However when a person insist on using their own baby as a prop in some bizarre political kabuki theatre of the absurd, sane people call that child abuse. This person has made several unconventional lifestyle choices and psychologist can determine the sanity of those, but when we go to the extremes to pretend to be breastfeeding an infant ,as we pretend to be a man, then I question the motivation. The political correctness of our culture will  default to accepting this unnatural combination of circumstances as someones “right” to choose how to live.  I see it differently. This person wants to be both a mother and a man. There is no such thing. It like wanting to be both a unicorn and a saytar. There are no such things and inventing them does not make them legitimate. Calling yourself a man and a mother does not make you a man or a mother. Just like calling yourself smart don’t make you smart or calling yourself tolerant or enlightened makes you tolerant or enlightened.

The abusive selfishness , moral confusion , self loathing , ignorance of nature and  contempt for nature demonstrated by this one person is fascinating. If this mother,( posing as a homosexual father) was taking this baby around to planned parenthood  clinics , rigging up the phony breastfeeding tube and pretending to breastfeed that child while using the baby to convince woman not to get an abortion, the political message would be construed differently. The moral equivalence wouldn’t be so politically correct to those who are pro abortion or those who now support this sort of  shock performance art as political statement.

In both cases it would be abusive to the child to use its innocense as symbolism, and child abuse should never be tolerated.

Again today, more lies.

The president of the United States was in Iowa. As he pandered to the paid attendees in the photo op, He complained That GOP Vice presidential Candidate and leader of the House Budget Committee Paul Ryan didn’t pass a farm bill to help the suffering farmers in Iowa. One problem…. Ryan and the House of Representatives PASSED a farm bill to help out the Iowa farmers 2 weeks ago. obama just lied because it sounded good I guess. Certainly he had to know the house passed a bill 2 weeks ago……. you would think. But yet today again, he lied right to our face.

Last week, more lies. “the American auto industry has come roaring back and GM is number one again. So now I want to do the same thing with manufacturing jobs not just in the auto industry, but in every industry”.

GM still owes 42 billion to the U.S. taxpayers according to the inspector General and it’s company’s stock has hit an all time low. The company is in turmoil. The regular bankruptcy laws would have kept G.M. open and operating but it would have forced the company to renegotiate the outrageous labor contracts the UAW has extracted over the years. That’s what killing G.M..  But the obama bailout ensured the legacy cost and labor union contracts were funded before the bond holders were paid. That is the exact opposite of what a bankruptcy court would have done. And in the long run, G.M. would have been much more healthy without the huge labor cost and legacy labor burden. It’s only a matter of time until G.M. is broke and forced into legitimate bankrupcy. The taxpayers will be stiffed and the situation made much worse by the obama interventions. Oh, and G.M. is exempt from federal taxes on it’s first 45 billion in profits, if it makes any profit.Tax cuts for the richest american corporations anyone ? Hello…….?!?

The biggest lie is this healthcare lie. In a joint session of congress he squawked

” Then there’s the problem of rising cost….insurance premiums have gone up three times faster than wages….our health care system is placing an unsustainable burden on taxpayers. When health care costs grow at the rate they have, it puts greater pressure on programs like Medicare and Medicaid. If we do nothing to slow these skyrocketing costs, we will eventually be spending more on Medicare and Medicaid than every other government program combined….Now, these are the facts. Nobody disputes them.” disputes them

“US health spending grew more slowly in 2009 and 2010—at rates of 3.8 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively—than in any other years during the fifty-one-year history of the National Health Expenditure Accounts. In 2010 extraordinarily slow growth in the use and intensity of services led to slower growth in spending for personal health care.”

There are several other publication that dispute obama’s claim. Too numerous to cite but easily found . All you have to do is look.  “Even The man who was President Obama’s White House budget director, Peter Orszag, disputes them.  He said  “The rising cost of health care in the U.S. has been slowing over the past few years.”

The reason to nationalize health care is not for health care. The reason is that it fundamentally changes the relationship between the citizen and the state. The person who is beholden on the state to provide health services for them or  their family is a subject, not a citizen. A free born citizen of a republic can choose his best course, choose his family’s best care. And I dare say choose to pay or not for that care. A subject is forced to accept the decisions of the state and is obliged to tolerate any burden placed on the subject for such services. The Orwellian named “affordable care act” is the same system that has failed the U.K , Canada, France, and others. It is a demonstrable failure, but obama drones on and on about it. Lie after lie after dispicable lie.

Who or what permits obama to  lie to our face, with impunity ?  A willing accomplice is the state controlled media who is so invested in the obama success story that it willfully ignores the blatant lies that spew from this administration and their cronies and sycophants. The networks have become propaganda machines for the state.

The result of this intercourse of statism and  mass propaganda is  fascism . It’s a soft fascism, but it is a tyranny none the less. The administration is bragging about its utter failures like they are successes and promising to bring upon the people more of that failure. The administration says outright lies and the sycophantic media accepts it , repeats it and fails to investigate the truth thereby failing  in its duty to the citizens .

obama does this all with a joke and a smile. A contrived good humor and jovial mannerisms. He comes off as harmless. The media tell us how likeable he is. How cool he is. How smart he is. How historic he is.

Whats obvious is how shallow and dishonest he is.

Two HIV-positive men were found to be free of detection following adult stem cell bone marrow transplants.
Eight months after the transplant doctors say they could not find HIV in either of the two Boston patients.
